My family and I have moved across the country for a new job. This is luckily my husband’s dream job, but the move has put quite a toll on our family. We moved here, then for training purposes we needed to move a couple counties over, and we are being assigned somewhere else in the state. We knew this was how this process was going to work, but we are exhausted. Please pray for us. I’ve been struggling with anxiety and panic attacks. We’ve all had gut/health problems. And we really miss having friends that get us and we are comfortable with. Please pray that we, especially my sons, get some excellent new friends. Maybe even that our new neighbors are just what we need. We homeschool so this is especially lonely right now. So I guess I’m asking for prayers and encouragement for health, rest and solid friends that get us.

Thank you.

    Cecily,
Seriously, thank you so much for your truth and acknowledging my truth. Ugh. Life is just hard sometimes. Things are finally looking up. Though I know there will be ups and downs. Thank you for the support!!!

Hi Stephanie- I hear you and I see you. I know the trauma of family upheaval (some call it moving, I call it fresh hell) all too well and it’s HARD and makes you cry mostly. I know...I know......people tell us it takes time and you will find your people and we should be grateful for the job at all. Yes that is true but it doesn’t help panic attacks and stomachaches and loneliness so deep your teeth hurt. Keep going, sister, anyway you can. Know you are not alone. You are seen and loved and your pain is true and real and acknowledged. Huge hugs coming to you. xo

I have friends in South Port, so we end up in that area often. How are you doing after the hurricane? We’ve been living in Kinston, but are making our last move to Bryson City at the end of the year.

We’ve had a tough year, but God has laid out the path so clearly. Literally every step we’ve taken, I can now see has brought us to this point. Makes me wish I had grabbed onto hope more strongly on the way. Easier to know that at the end of the journey though. But I choose hope now. Especially because a lot has gone into getting us here. I feel like there just has to be some purpose in all of this.

    Hi Stephanie,
Just wanted to let you know I read your story and wish the best for your family. It takes some time to fit into a new community, but I believe it will all work out the way it is suppose to. What part of North Carolina did you move to? We live in Wilmington, NC! Not sure if you are close to us, but maybe I can connect you with friends/family in other parts of the state :)

    Lucinda,
Thank you so much. We have done a crazy amount of moves too, even international, but something about your words finally made it click that this is like culture shock. Not even just because it is culturally different, but because we have no safety net. I feel like simple things are so hard for me. This reminds me that this is temporary. That in three years (which has been typical for me too), that we will have a community. Thank you so much for your words.

Hi Stephanie, I totally get it! I have done 4 major moves in my life from Calgary to Toronto then Oxford (UK) and then Chicagoland. The last one was an international move with two young kids for my husband's work. I have so been in your shoes and it is soooo hard. My husband had his job to focus on and the kids had school but I felt so lost even though it was my role to be support person to everyone else. It's even harder for you as you are homeschooling so have to actively managed that for your family along with everything else. I feel you on the stress and anxiety. I used to get panicky in the grocery store because all the food looked different with different packaging and different names and nothing was where I thought it would be on the shelves. I thought I was stupid because I couldn't even do something as simple as getting groceries without finding it hard. It felt like it took us a year to feel like we had some seedlings of friendships just barely sprouting. By year two we had small but sturdy friendship plants and by year three we had a deeper root system of friends we could turn to. But man, the first year was hard. Just feeling like there was NO-ONE you could call if you needed help. What I have realized is that people asked if I needed anything and I always said no. Even things like blankets because it took 3 months for us to get our furniture/house goods. We just suffered without stuff. But I know now that the people who offered help were sincere and I should have said yes. It is way harder to receive help than it is to give it. At least for me. Finding new friends is like dating. You have to try out different people except it's even harder finding new family friends because everyone in the family needs to click with everyone in your family at least on some level. I found that putting myself out there was helpful. I went to the playground and chatted up the other mothers. I went to the PTO meetings and tried to get involved. Maybe there is a church or other group you can join? Even the library was helpful as they often do classes for kids who are home schooled. Maybe try seeing if there is a home school support group in your neighbourhood? I know we have that here. Just know that you are not alone and that its ok for it to be hard! Others are walking with you. Lots of Love, Lucinda

Stephanie, I am sending you great "friendfinding" vibes! Also, I love to quilt and am in central NC. Lots of our neighbors commute to Ft. Bragg. I also have friends who homeschool and know of resources. Also let me know about what you need for self care!! xoxo Lucy H.

For those of you that asked about sending something for self care, I think either bath bombs, essential oil candles, gift certificate for massage or hair cut would be really helpful. I’ll be moving to Bryson City, N.C. so anything near there or in Asheville would be great. No pressure at all. Just if you’d like. Thank you everyone for the prayers and encouragement!!

    Patti,
I hope you have found your community.

Stephanie, I moved to Wyoming from Columbus, Ohio 2 yrs ago for similar reasons and I can identify with you. It’s hard starting over and dealing with so much change and helping your kids adjust. Know that you’re not alone! Best of luck to you!

    Anne,
I have been pondering picking up yoga again. I’ve been working on positive thinking. I think making a true practice of it through meditation is something I need to do.
  • Anne
Hi Stephanie! My family recently moved to another country and I understand how you're feeling! Please trust that you will start feeling more comfortable in time-- all it takes is one person to open the door to a whole new network. If you can find the time/ space, for meditation, it can help with the anxiety (and when the anxiety is managed, everything seems more possible). I'm sending you and your family hugs and positive thoughts.
  • Stephanie
Lucy! Thanks! I’d love to hear if you have connections to finding a homeschool group. We are loosely Charlotte mason. We will be moving up near Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

    Jennifer,
Thank you so much. I’m not sure what I would need as far as self care. I’ve been quilting a lot. That has helped a ton! What did you have in mind? I think I feel bad asking for anything, but I guess I’ve been having a really hard time with my hair here since I’ve moved. I’m not sure if I need to get it recut or if I just need a really amazing conditioner or something.

Sending you love and prayers today and this holiday season. Praying for strength, rest, friendship, support, and a bit of calm in the midst of your current storm. Lots of love to you guys. You can do hard things.
  • Stephanie
Robi, thank you for the reminder that this is only a season. It is so hard not to get caught up in the struggle in the moment. I know in another year or two I will have a strong community around me.
  • Robi
I’ll definitely keep all of you in my prayers. I’m in Forsyth County, NC. Transplanted from Texas many years ago. I hope you will find North Carolina as warm and friendly and loving as we have. This is just a season that you’re going through, which doesn’t make it any less hard, but once you’re settled I’m sure you will make all the loving connections that you’re looking for. Best of luck!

You are on my prayer list love warrior. We can do hard things. I love you, I pray for healing, smooth transition, peace and guidance in your families name. You can do this. I am a military spouse and understand the struggle of the constant move and uncertainty. Though we are retired now, it is hard to to be exhausted. May I gift you with some form of self care? Love you friend.

    Stephanie,

I know how hard it can be to move to a new location where you know no-one! I was in the same position last year, and I relate to your struggles with anxiety. I saw your update in the comments, and I am glad to hear such a positive report. I am praying for you to find your people, and I am praying for relief from the anxiety! It's such a battle. Sending lots of love.

Thank you so much. As an update since I sent this, we have been assigned to our #1 choice in N.C. and found a house that fits us exactly. My husband’s coworker is someone we can really get along with and we may have already found a church!! I would love continued prayers about anxiety, especially social anxiety and making deep friend connections and homeschool friends.
