This bright, beautiful, 18 years young, fiercely-liberal soul has been battling anorexia for almost two years. Some days she’s able to face her fears and put one foot in front of the other. But most days she’s bone tired from fighting the battle. How do you convince someone that life is worth living? How can I show her that she’s not alone; that there’s a world full of love and discovery and belonging that she just can’t see right now? Looking for words of encouragement for my daughter, Anna, to show her that however small, she has a place of significance in the world. That things do get better. That she matters. Looking toGETherRISING with your notes of kindness, compassion, inspiration and connection. A spark of hope burns bright in this mama’s heart. Thank you for being the light.

Oh goodness Anna - my heart goes out to you. It sucks that you struggle with this disease, it’s not fair. When you cone out of this dark time (and you will) , life will be here waiting for you. Don’t be discouraged if your timeline is different from everyone else’s (I’m 31 and remind myself of this frequently). You are going to do all the things we are all meant to do - fall in love, experience new things, take on challenges, and work your butt off for the life you deserve. You might not see a path to that right now, but just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there. Just because the sun is behind the clouds doesn’t mean it’s not there (my mom used to tell me that I know it’s a little corny). It’s hard to hold on to the belief that things can be different when you’re struggling, we convince ourselves that we will never have what other people do, or that our lives will be an empty shell. Don’t believe that lie. Life is waiting for you to grab it by the balls, I just know it ❤️.

Between the ages of fourteen and twenty-two, I struggled with anorexia and bulimia and was hospitalized five times. Today, I am healthy and alive and have a positive, nourishing relationship with food. All of this is just to say, I am with your daughter and have so much hope for her. I am living proof that it does get better! Please let me know how I can send her a note....preferably via snail mail. My email address is autumnvandiver34@gmail.com.

As a now mom-to-two, but also a human who’s struggled with a very eating-disordered time from ages 17-21 [AND depression], I would love to write her a letter from the “other side.” There is SO, SO much to live for, as you + I both know. A greater distance from this brand of all-consuming animal is an incredible cure.

    My email is mandi.middlestetter@gmail.com.
