100 girls and young women who have lost mothers provided mentors

This Mother’s Day, we are thinking not only of those for whom this day brings joy, but also of those for whom this day is hard—including those who never had the mothers they needed, or who have lost mothers and maternal figures.

Through Together Rising, you invested $20,000.00 in empowerHER, an organization that supports young women and girls who have lost their mothers by providing dedicated, caring mentors—women who have lived through the loss of their own mothers, who have been right where these girls and young women are.

Lena, one of the young women in the mentorship program, lost her mother to cancer when she was fourteen. She joined the program four years ago. When asked how it has impacted her, she said: 

“It changed my outlook on everything. In high school, if you lose your mom, that becomes what defines you—you become the girl whose mom passed away.  But I’ve learned that’s not what defines you, it’s your strength and how you handle adversity.”
