Responding to Hurricane Maria
Last month, through Together Rising, you stood with Texas and gave $320,000 to those suffering after Harvey. Now it’s time to stand with our sisters and brothers suffering in Puerto Rico after the devastation of Hurricane Maria. Officials in Puerto Rico say the destruction has set the island back nearly 20 to 30 years – the governor says the island is “essentially devastated. Complete destruction of the power infrastructure, severe destruction of the housing infrastructure, food and water are needed.” The mayor of San Juan reports that people don’t have medication, insulin, food, or water. The mayor of a north coastal town said, “Hysteria is starting to spread. The hospital is about to collapse. We need someone to help us immediately.” Reports are saying that shelters are running out of food. The situation in Puerto Rico is very challenging because the airport has been closed. Organizations are all struggling to figure out how to provide assistance. However, we are working with our friends at Direct Relief, who have worked for many years in Puerto Rico and already have a shipment of relief en route, as well as two key staff members on their way to the island by ship – they will arrive tomorrow. If we rally today, we can send another shipment of desperately needed supplies right away. There’s an Irish proverb, “It is in the shelter of each other that the people will live.”Please give a small gift today. This is how we shelter each other. This is how we decide how we will live. The people of Puerto Rico are desperate for medical supplies, water, fuel and food. If we come together, we can deliver life-saving supplies within the week.100% of what we receive goes directly to suffering people. Together Rising is matching each of your gifts up to $100,000.You can give at this link: https://app.mobilecause.com/form/xVzQ0A Or text TR4RELIEF to 41444 for a link to give your tax-deductible donation.Or you can give through our Together Rising Paypal link and write Hurricane Relief in the memo: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick…
We Belong to Each Other. Pertenecemos Unos a Otros.
UPDATE:
THANK YOU. Yesterday, we at Together Rising invited you to step up and stand for our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico – fellow American citizens who have endured unimaginable loss and are now in desperate suffering. You stepped up in a bold and beautiful way. In ONE DAY you raised more than $150,000.100% of what we received from you is going to Puerto Rico.Plus, Together Rising is matching $100,000 of your giving. This means we’ve together raised over $250,000 for Puerto Rico, and you good people are still giving. We know this urgency of intervening in this crisis — Funds are going out of our accounts TONIGHT to rush to the aid of the brave survivors in Puerto Rico. The situation there is very challenging and aid organizations are all struggling to figure out how to provide assistance. But we are working with our friends at Direct Relief, who have worked in Puerto Rico for years. Key staff members travelled by ship and arrived on the island TODAY with a shipment of relief.Because of your fierce and generous giving, Direct Relief will be able to immediately deploy our funds to deliver — in the next few days –additional aid including essential medicines, bandages, wound care, personal safety gear, body wash, sanitary products, toothbrushes, and emergency health hits – each kit is able to treat 1000 people for 30 days. Because of you, Direct Relief is right now on the ground accessing the greatest needs, and they will be able to help meet those needs with your giving. There’s an Irish proverb, “It is in the shelter of each other that the people will live.” You helped to shelter our suffering family in Puerto Rico, and because you did, more of our family will live. Thank you. We are still gratefully accepting funds to help our fellow American citizens in Puerto Rico.
In the picture below, doctors and nurses were being provided with Emergency Health Kits, which contain basic medicines and first aid supplies, to equip them to travel to 15 different towns across Puerto Rico to provide medical care. Each Emergency Health Kit contains enough essential medicines to treat 100 patients for three to five days. You are saving lives in Puerto Rico, friends. Thank you for being the helpers — thank you for sending the helpers.
