In Australia, more than 12 million acres have burned – an area larger than Switzerland. Countless people are trying to frantically escape the inferno. Today we heard of thousands of families – including mothers holding infants and children clutching dogs – weary and shaken from a 20-hour voyage along the coast of Australia because the fires prevented them from escaping inland. Fires have torn through nature reserves – home to koalas, sea lions and other endemic wildlife. Almost 90% of Australia’s wildlife can be found only on that continent – and as the fires consume their native habitats, there is little refuge for these precious animals. Skies are full of choking smoke, and the horrors are only expected to get worse, as the heroic volunteer force of fire fighters in rural areas are depleted and overwhelmed.
